Ah, dude, that is exactly my problem… my feet are “dead” until I remind myself to use all 4 of my tools! I guess I’m afraid that by opening my guard I get passed right away… which is usually the case since if I do open my guard I don’t use the feet to help the hands!
Thanks for another great video!!

Paul always does a great job to find the grappling principle you should employ, and not just cheap techniques. Combined with his ability to communicate and break things down, it makes his teaching invaluable, and not just for OGs like me. Trust me, I have trained and studied under the best of the Brazilians, and they may know these things, but they just do not teach the over-arching principles that we should be stringing together.
Thank you Paul, and please keep it coming!

I’m a white belt and I usually have a hard time remebering that I have two other limbs during sparring. I felt that this video brought it into perspective for me as a beginner!
July 24th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Paul keep it up ur videos rock !!!!! I think that even seasoned grapplers can refresh some of there game by getting pointers from a true OG. This is a lesson that should be iterated EVERY time you hit the mats, no matter your skill level.
Thanks Paul
P.S. The link works so stay away from speeding traffic

Very good advice. Detailed and informative. Im not gay but I cant get it ot of my head two men doing that naked!
July 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Paul
I have to say that this is not only very easy it is very affective at not only keeping your opponent at bay when you are on your back but very affective from the top. I seem to get alot more leg lazy from the top. It makes it alot easier to trap and get to side controle. I see most of us og’s over thinking things and making it hard on are selfs. Fancy looks cool but just does noy work all the time!
Thanks Paul and keep the blog going!
July 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Paul,
You’re so good about making things simple. With such limited time, energy and resources it may be that one extra movement that brings us to victory. It’s like overwhelming your opponent and causing them to either continually counter or at a minimum use up his limited energy levels.
Great stuff
July 24th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
EXCELLENT!!
Keeping active is something that I have just started to do in class and this video drives that point home!
Thank You Sir!
July 24th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Thank you very much. You are very kind for sharing your advice and I’m sure good things will come to for it.
July 24th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
As a 40 year old purple belt who didn’t start grappling until I was 34, I always look forward to your tips and techniques. I especially like how you give hints and strategies as opposed to just demonstrating new moves. This video as well as the video on constantly controlling the head from the guard have made my guard game much more effective. Please keep the tips coming and maybe you can run a seminar designed for 40 year old, inflexible, and slow BJJ guys, thanks
July 24th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Awesome video! I always get trapped into only using the one limb I’m thinking about at the time. I will be working at using all 4!
July 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Great points once again. I enjoy seeing what you got to offer and your instructions make sense when seeing it in action. I always take new things to my dojo and practice them and show others. Great to know you are taking the time to educate us OG’s.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Great stuff, Paul. Very helpful. For me, there can’t be enough focus on the basics.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Sometimes I forget to use my legs in the open guard, I just put them on the hips.
Good video, as usual, keep them coming, thank”s.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Perfect! This is exactly what most beginners need. I’ve been at it over a year and still need to be reminded that I have more than two hands. Whenever I roll with a blue belt that uses their legs and feet, it is like fighting two people. Keep up the great work.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Agree with everyone. I think sometimes you get caught up in the game so much that you forget to do these essential movements. I am sometimes very lazy with my movements on the bottom and rely too much on upper body movement and forget about the feet and freeing up my hips!! Keep up the great work Paul, really refreashing in a market that sometimes puts out videos that don’t really help the newbie or O.G
July 24th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
muy bueno pretty useful stuff i love it..
July 25th, 2009 at 7:16 am
My feet just hang there. No wonder my guard is easy to pass. My hands are constantly moving and working. But my feet just sit there and not do any thing. I like this tip, Thanks alots
July 25th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Yep that’s what I do and know you have told us the problem I might be able to fix it,keep up the good work .
July 25th, 2009 at 10:37 am
as always..great stuff!
July 25th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Thanks as usual Paul! This is something I really need to work on and since my open guard is terrible right now drilling these movements should close a lot of gaps I am noticing.
July 25th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Another nugget of gold from the wise grappler. There’s a lot of knowledge that I’m receiving from you, and it’ jacking my game up. Thanks again, Paul!
July 26th, 2009 at 1:47 am
Really good, I will have to ensure I put that into practice
July 26th, 2009 at 11:54 am
LOL, Too old to be grappling, i think maybe I might fall into that category But you are looking good Paul. Keep up the good work Bro. love the videos.
July 26th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Thanks Paul,
I enjoy the way you take the simplist and and most basic principle and show just how important and useful it is. Keep it up Paul we look forward
to learning from you!
July 26th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Paul
the basics are always the best and you demonstrate this perfectly with this tip! I love the simplicity of BJJ in as much as the simple things work so effectively!!! Turning 43 next month and can’t see myself slowing down for a few years yet (injury permitting haha)
July 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Paul awsome stuff i occasionally get lazy and this a great reminder keep them coming
July 29th, 2009 at 12:38 am
Paul:
I think this was very helpful. I am thinking a lot about the different states/paces of being “active”, passive, explosive as well as slow. I have realized before the importance of strategic placements of feet and hands when defending the guard but I have never come across the approach of stressing having all four limbs working at the same time and NOT having anyone taking the day off! Very good!
Thanks alot!

Thanks again, Master Paul:
I find myself getting so caught up in one thing, that I wind up forgetting that I have other tools out there that aren’t being used. Thanks for the reminder.

Clear, simple, thanks for another good video.
July 29th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
absolutely spot on. I have been been guilty of this lazy hand and feet. I have gotten caught up with gripping and just trying to hang on and not working it. Thanks for making me aware of it. One of the hardest guys I ever rolled with always was moving and using his feet and hands all the time. keep it up OG Warrior.
July 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
I’m 54 years old and in the brief time I’ve watched and studied your ideas and techniques, along with your expertise, my grappling has improved ten fold.

Thanks Paul for giving me another kick in the arse. I am always lazy on the bottom for some reason. I will try to pay attention and catch myself before I get caught. Keep up the good work.
OG’S UNITE!!

Right on…this may be one of the links that I can throw in and use quickly. So far my instruction has been 60% new moves, none of which I can execute well.
Of course that means that I quickly end up either getting submitted or that I’m just sitting in some weird position trying to be a tree stump.
So when I go to class on Monday I’m going to keep all four moving, all the time.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:53 am
Man I always forget this stuff, Thanks Paul for reminding me of all this useful information….
August 2nd, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Ahh…yes. good reminder always. A lot of grapplers tend to forget to work all 4 major limbs. Thanks for the simple yet crucial reminder!!
August 3rd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Thanks great info….It’s funny how you forget the little things when you start thinking 3 or 4 steps ahead. technique technique
Thanks again
Jason

Spot on! When I can get all four going good things happen. When I stop and have to think, usually my feet just lock up or stop altogether. thanks for the reminder!
August 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 pm
My feet tend to try to make up for my supremely lazy hands. Hands are so lazy I’m surprised I’m even typing this.
Tips much appreciated, thanks.

Good for any white belt to know!
August 5th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Paul, this is my second post to this video. It’s great stuff! I’m 37, new to martial arts, new to BJJ (three months), and just found these videos last week.
I study a lot in college and am always learning new stuff that requires my mental attention. This summer I’m taking a statistics class and two Spanish classes. SO much studying. But the ideas you are putting forth in this video have been totally occupying my “thought-stream” for the past week.
Unfortunately, I bruised my ribs last week rolling with a big no-gi and am having to be less proactive in training. Instead I’m just trying to stick with the pain and not have to take a bunch of time off.
What is cool though, is that now I have some strategy that I can play with instead of just wasting my time “cockroaching” around on the mat. Seriously, I’ve been shown about 30 or 40 moves in the past few months and can rarely execute or even remember most of them. It’s a total waste of time without a bigger game. Thanks for one, helping me realize that and two, sharing the knowledge about how to put the pieces together.

Maybe not too old, but probably not Brazilian enough.
Good vid.
September 8th, 2009 at 11:14 am
I have tried lots of dvd that are full of techniques but i think if you dont have the bkue print for these its useless. And i think thats what makes paul different. In all the dvd ive watched i have never heard them say lazy hands lazy feet etc.
Paul i practise the bull pass with a chair and it really works
as einstien said creativity is more important than knowlege!
keep up the good work
