Thanks, Paul. This one reinforces what I’ve learned myself and having you put the exclamation point to it really makes this stick. “Weathering the storm” is something as an OG (52) I’ve made myself adopt with mostly the newer white belts. They’ll blow themselves out and make the tap easy as long as I don’t try to go “muscle or muscle” with them.

Appreciate the good advice and I need to make some time and view the other videos you’ve published these past few weeks.

    Master P,

You know, i cant thank you enough for all these little tips for us OG’s. They work great, what i do is that i jot down the main points on my note pad, remember it, and apply it when i roll.

Thank you again for the information. More progress to come.
    Keep us informed, fellow OG.

    Angel

Thanks for the video Paul. Its great to see information published for the older guys. I’m 45 and although I still work out and stay in good shape, I’m just not as willing to deal with high levels of aggression in training. I want to enjoy BJJ, not dread every training session. There was a niche for this information, and you’re doing a great job filling it. I’ve already placed an order. Thank you.

  4. Dan Says:

    Wow Paul, incredible timing.

Now this is a bit of a twist to how I percieved what was currently going on but it fits to a tee. I’ve met my new partner, been working a bit with them and have been trying to get them on the mat a good 4 times this week now. Problem is they won’t even show up!! I’ve traveled a lot of miles with a lot of expense, we’ve set a schedule to meet 4 times this week. First two no show’s were bung and last night I told them to give me a call…no call. Here’s the twist, up to now I have been the intimidated one, at least I thought all along, maybe I don’t understand that they may be intimidated, but I do understand the abuse and lack of respect I feel I’m being shown. I have politely excused them due to their excuses. I thought of going over to their house but if I can’t get someone to even try then I’m a bit short on what to do. I told my daughter that when I came over here I was going to break my rules, maybe now’s the time I do. I prefer to be passive but have been trying that to the point that needs to change to my assertiveness, abuse or whatever we should call it….or dump them as a partner, I don’t think the master would like that though, my patience grows thin!!

thanks for posting video=i can apply this technique not only in grappling but in dealing with people on a day by day basis-thanks for your help

  8. Alan Says:

    Hi Paul,

What you,re saying makes a lot of sense, but I still wonder HOW we go about developing that mindset. If these guys are really working us over, how do we make the jump to where we start giving it back?

    Alan

  9. Carl Says:

Nice clip. You are definitely addressing issues that are not normally discussed. THanks.

  10. Paul Says:

ha ha ha! This sort of thing happens to me EVERY time I go training! The younger guys make a bee-line for me when they are fresh to spar and try to roughhouse me around the mat. I sort of ‘weaher the storm’, they get tired and THEN I start to roll! Thing is, they are younger, faster, stronger, meaner, more aggressive but I am fitter and sneakier! ha ha.

Doesn’t mean I always beat them but at least they respect me (I think!)

great stuff, but over 35 isn’t ‘old’! ;-)

  11. Tony Says:

What you’re teaching in this video needs to be taught in all martial art dojos! Schools teach so much of the physical part of combat but don’t deal with the mental part much, and the mental part can be 50 – 75% of the fight! Keep doing what you’re doing bruh!

  12. Travis G Says:

    Sensei Paul.

Great video, I am just turning 38 this year and this is a problem I have had to deal with quite often lately. From my prospective “overagression” is fine with me as long as my opponent is not reckless. Personally I do not find it at all satisfying having to “Put it on” my opponent but unfortunately sometimes it is necessary.

    Keep up the good work.

  13. Will Says:

I’d be interested in some more detail on this topic. Thanks for the vids.

  14. Jayzao Says:

    I agree with Paul,
I weather the storm and never allow myself to be taken out of my game and because I am over 40 and spend all my free time doing cardio and watching BJJ dvd’s I prevail.

  15. John Says:

The one that is overly aggressive is usually the insecure one. It would seem that one should remain calm, but elevate the aggressiveness to match the opponent. Great vid.

  16. Chris C. Says:

Great tip Paul. I have the OG Video 1 where you expound on this exact subject and it has has helped me immensely. I am naturally a laid back try-to-be nice guy but we get new guys in the gym that come once or maybe for a week that are muscled up wrestler types and look at you like you’re their grappling dummy.

I used to look down, look away, smile, laugh a little before sparring and I was shook before we ever engaged out of shyness and timidity.
Now I have much more confidence and will look them eye to eye, nose to nose and send the message to them that I’m not their doormat and they are going to have a war on their hands before sparring even starts.

An interesting thing I’ve noticed is even a smaller/medium sized guy like me giving them the treatment tends to disorient and catch them by surprise because they are used to being the alphas and having the other guy at a mental disadvantage though the match and it’s just not there.

When sparring I am only as rude with techniques/return bullying as they give me reason to be but if they push they will get pushed back plus a little. I can honestly say I have you to thank Paul for looking at the game from a different perspective and realizing Bullying and Posturing is psychological and you can play the same game and can be distracting to the point that it can open up opportunities for you.
    Thanks again,
    Chris C.

as a 38 yr old female i can say i see this type of behavior a lot and i had to naturally learn to “weather the storm”. sometimes i barely break a sweat while waiting for my opening! i can’t wait to get to the blue and purple belt level when i’ll actually have more technical skill – then – WATCH OUT! peace to all the og’s!

  18. chuck Says:

Yo Paul once again great stuff i think it is great when you get into the mental mindset it is so important thanks

  19. Chris D Says:

Great video. Had problems like that before and your right. If you can decide that you will not get flustered no matter what gets thrown at you they lose heart with the intimidation game plan. In my experience weathering the storm not just in an individual session but over a prolonged period allows you skill level to improve and the steep learning curve that follows makes you a very intimadating prospect for mat bullies and there pride.
