Paul,
Good stuff. I think this mindset can be used to not only hold but to establish a position. Sometimes when I’m rolling with the young guns too much scrambling causes me to tire a little quicker. I’ll take this mindset and positional control with me to class and use it to my advantage. Thanks OG!

I guess you can never underestimate the power of a REFUSE TO LOSE ATTITUDE.
By nature I’m not very competitive, I always value being more technically savvy than my sparring partners…which is sometimes detrimental when I run into a guy who just wants to win.
How often do you guys have this problem? Or are you the competitor?
Paul?

Good stuff Paul, your physical conditioning is very important but the mental application of never give up, never surrender, hold on, provides that mental opportunity to have that second wind kick in. In wrestling we called it kamakazi. It’s at the end when everyone is tired and exhausted. That’s when you have do more than just hold on, you ratchet it up and raise the bar. It’s that execution you end with.

I have the same problem Atlantic, but it makes me get better sooner than them, I have partners than are ex rugbiers, bodybuilders , etc… and they always want to win but depend too much of their strength so when they fight a stronger oponent there”s nothing to do, at least my style works against stronger partners.
Iloved the video, keep them coming.

Paul,
I guess it’s time to let you know how much I like your videos and your advice!
I’m an OG that only recently started. After about 4 months there was a tourney in town and I figured what the heck, let’s just try it! Wow what an experience. Because there were not enough OGs I had to roll with the young guys… Thanks to your advices I did not only survive… But in fact won my very first tourney!!!!
Thanks!!!!

Master Paul:
Great words, and great advice. I’m easily the oldest guy in my class, and at 5′6″ & 155lbs, also the smallest. That mindset you’re talking about is especially important for me to keep in mind, as I usually don’t have the option of falling back on brute strength to hold my position against the larger guys in the class. My coach (who speaks very highly of you and what you’ve taught him) and now you have been insistent on stressing technique and the proper mental game over sheer muscle.
Thanks again.

Position & control can defeat scrambling & youth

More great intuitive advice that doesn’t seem to make it to the brain when you’re exhausted! There are a lot of guys in my school who are younger, fitter, and stronger than I, but by using your advice and gaining positional control and maintaining it I can sit there and watch them burn, burn, burn their energy (and physical advantage) until they make a mistake or, as in your example, the whistle blows, the horn sounds, the fat lady sings.

Your advice has been helping keep positive. I am the smallest person in class with the person closest in size to me being 25 pounds heavier. I am also 30, having never done any type of athletic activity before, and female. Thanks for the help.

Been there and it’s tough but well worth it when you look back. Great advice as always Paul!

It blows me away that mind-set coaching isn’t just a regular part of training, like warm-ups and drilling. Like you say, it’s one of the three legs of the training triangle.
One day the stuff you teach will be taught to every new and intermediate student…and repeated for the advanced students too, so they never forget.

Atlantic — Yeah I get a lot of guys who are only out to win, my motivation is to out last them when they go “spastic” on me. It’s taken me some time, but I’m learning to thwart their attacks with simple moves that throw them off balance, or cause them to re think what I’m doing. when they tire out, I tap’em out.
Paul — Great advice, I’m turning 38 and I’m having a blast training. Even being one of the oldest guys in class I’m already becoming the one guy everyone wants to beat. This motivates me to get better everyday. Thanks for all the tips and advice!

Your right Paul,
So many times that I gain position and think I got to do something right now and end up blowing it.
July 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Paul,
This is good advice. I try to do this with the young guys all the time. I get position and then try to make them burn some energy because they have more strength and energy then I do.

I think your sense of humor and down to earth approach makes learning fun and interesting. Keep up the good work Paul.
